Jon Puryear career in EMS began in 1983 at 17 years old becoming a volunteer on the Everman Volunteer Ambulance. He went to a CPR class, First Aid class, Texas Emergency Care Attendant , EMT , Intermediate (Advanced ), and a Paramedic. He received his NREMT Paramedic in 1996 before it was required and Transitioned to NRP.
He began teaching in 1987 and has an extensive career as an Educator for EMT classes, Advanced classes, Paramedic classes, and Critical Care Paramedic. His experience is faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School Dallas and Tarrant County College. He worked for 12 years at MedStar Mobile Healthcare in Fort Worth Texas as a Paramedic/FTO, 6 years at CareFlite in Texas as a Clinical Coordinator & Educator, and 5 years as the Assistant to the Medical Director for Dr. Griswell managing the Emergency Physicians Advisory Board Office of the Medical Director for MedStar Mobile Healthcare in Fort Worth Texas.
Jon's is a passionate teacher and it shows to anyone who takes his classes. He is very animated and explains the body comparing it to normal everyday things that people understand. He calls it the "KISP" (Keep it Simple Puryear). It is important to understand how the body works normally because only then, is it easy to recognize the abnormal. If you understand it and "get it", then the treatment is easy!
Jon developed and began teaching the 16 hour NREMT Prep Class/Review in 2003 and has taught over 100K individuals worldwide. In 2009, Jon worked with the NREMT to get acceptance of the first Virtual Instructor Led Classroom (VILC) counting for live classroom F5 category CE hours. Because of this, he is known as the "Father of the VILCs" and now others may perform the same type of live online classes He developed his own Learning Management Platform to teach Recorded CE Courses, Refreshers, and Classes.
He is a national speaker/presenter speaking at Regional/State/National Conferences including JEMS Today, EMS Expo, State EMS Conferences, TRAC and Trauma Symposiums, and Cardiac Symposiums at many Cardiac Hospitals. Jon has published articles, participated in several studies, and has been contracted to teach specialty classes (EKG Interpretation, 12 Lead EKG Interpretation, Capnography, EMS CE Extravaganzas). He performs keynote motivational presentations for Conferences, Annual Meetings, Chamber of Commerce Banquets, Award Ceremonies, and Graduation Ceremonies.
Jon performs services as an Expert Witness for law firms in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. He has over 4 decades experience in all aspects of Emergency Medicine/EMS. This includes reports, depositions, and trials. Jon will only accept a contract if he believes in the case after a free consultation.
In his younger years, he was a Professional Rodeo Clown/Barrelman and retired after a fracture in his cervical spine. Jon is still very active in the medical side of rodeos and western themed events. He is happily married, has children and grandchildren, 5 horses, is a Board Member of the Chisholm Trail 100 Club, was a member of the Johnson County Sheriffs Posse (which is all voluntary), was a Fire Commissioner for the Johnson County ESD 1, created a Mounted Equine EMS Team at MedStar Mobile Healthcare in Ft Worth and CareFlite in the Dallas/Ft Worth Texas metropolitan areas. Jon is an avid golfer competing in different tournaments and playing with friends.
